Silver Fluoride Aesthetic Considerations

Limited lifespan of primary teeth.

Primary teeth have a limited lifespan; any aesthetic imperfections; any  imperfections are not long lasting.  Clinicians need to be aware and this aspect of using silver fluoride should be explained to the  patients and their parents, and reinforced with an explanation, an example  is shown below. This explanation also  serves to minimise  mis-diagnosis if the child sees another dentist unfamiliar with using silver fluoride.

Communication  with patient’s parents

Dear _____________

___________  has just received silver fluoride treatment designed to stop decay.  Silver fluoride kills bacteria and fluoride helps  repair the tooth. This approach is an alternative to drilling and filling.
The treated area of the tooth will turn dark brown to black. This is a sign of success and not to be confused with active decay.  If you have any questions please ask.
